The Little House Project
The Little House Project is an ongoing community project. Originally made for an exhibition in April 2020, postponed due to covid and shown in a smaller format than originally planned in May/June 2022. I worked in schools ,with artists and anyone who was interested in participating. My youngest contributor, was 5 years old and my oldest 84 years old. Participants are invited to make a small paper house (or other materials if desired) which will be a representation of themselves .I asked people to think about the house as a self portrait. It is a subjective rather than objective portrait so each maker must consider the inside and outside separately. Windows, door and colour. Each house will become part of a sculpture street/town/city of similar shapes but none identical to each other
The house is a metaphor for each of us. Whilst the shape remains largely the same, representing the common attributes of a human being. The material, colour, texture, arrangement of windows and doors may represent the individuality of each of us and how we identify with the world around us. I asked participants to consider, for example.
Are you and open or closed person? (interaction with others)
Is what you feel inside of your self different from the person you present as to the world?
Do I need other people around me or am I self contained.
This project may be resurrected in the future when it is possible to go back into schools and the wider community.
